In a groundbreaking initiative, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has officially launched the Chief Minister’s School Nutrition Programme, making it the first and largest school nutrition initiative in Pakistan. The inauguration took place in Dera Ghazi Khan, where CM Maryam Nawaz personally distributed nutritious milk packs to young students, emphasizing the government’s commitment to combating malnutrition among schoolchildren.
Launch Event at Government Primary School
CM Maryam Nawaz attended a distribution event at Government Primary School, DG Khan, where she personally handed out milk cartons to students, ensuring that every child received their share. She also engaged with the children, inquiring about their education, well-being, and any challenges they faced in their studies.
During her interaction, a student shared concerns about his father’s unemployment. In response, CM Maryam Nawaz directed the authorities to arrange a job for the student’s father, highlighting her compassionate leadership and dedication to addressing social issues alongside educational reforms.
Key Details of the School Nutrition Programme
The CM Punjab School Nutrition Programme aims to provide nutritious milk packs to over 400,000 students suffering from malnutrition. The programme initially targets three districts of South Punjab: Dera Ghazi Khan, Rajanpur, and Muzaffargarh.
Programme Highlights:
- A 175-milliliter milk pack will be provided daily to students.
- The initiative covers 3,527 schools across the selected districts.
- Students will return empty milk packs at school, which will then be recycled.
- Revenue generated from recycling will be reinvested into the respective schools, promoting sustainability and school improvements.
Government’s Vision for Child Health and Education
Addressing the gathering, Provincial Education Minister Rana Sikandar Hayat briefed the Chief Minister on the project’s objectives and implementation strategy. The initiative aims to tackle malnutrition, improve student health, and enhance focus and performance in schools.
The Punjab government plans to expand the programme to other districts in the near future, ensuring that children across the province receive proper nutrition for their academic and physical development.
